#1.) Work with numbers from 1 – 99. Have your child round the number you choose to the nearest 10.
Example: Round 23 to the nearest 10.
The two options would be 20 or 30. Is 23 closest to 20 or 30? It is 3 away from 20 and 7 away from 30, so 23 is closest to 20.
Example: Round 85 to the nearest 10.
The two options would be 80 or 90. Is 85 closest to 80 or 90? It is exactly in the middle! If this happens, you always round up! Therefore, 85 would round up the 90.
Example: Round 8 to the nearest 10.
The two options would be 0 or 10. 8 is closest to 10 (as it is only 2 away) so it would round to 10.
#2.) Add two-digit by two-digit numbers while estimating answer FIRST!
Example: 24 + 63 (this problem requires no re-grouping) — estimate first by rounding to nearest 10…(20 + 60 = 80, so your actual answer should be close to this…)
Example: 86 + 95 (this problem requires re-grouping)
